Literacy Assessment
Literacy Assessment
Understand your child’s literacy baseline skills, strengths, needs, and next steps.
A literacy assessment evaluates a child’s literacy skills, including phonological and phonemic awareness, letter-sound knowledge, blending, segmenting, decoding, spelling, and reading comprehension. The direct assessment appointment is usually 45-60 minutes.
An assessment may include
Detailed parent or caregiver interview and developmental history
Standardised assessment where appropriate
Informal and functional assessment
Discussion of findings, recommendations and suitable next steps
Assessment Fees (includes GST)
| Assessment Option | Fee |
|---|---|
| 45–60 minutes with verbal feedback of results and recommendations | $200 |
| 45–60 minutes with verbal feedback and brief written summary and recommendations | $320 |
| 45–60 minutes with verbal feedback and full comprehensive report | $410 |
Assessment reports reflect the information available and the child’s presentation at the time. They do not guarantee a diagnosis, eligibility, funding, school placement or a particular outcome.
Pricing note: All fees are in New Zealand dollars and include GST.
Communication Screening
A clear first step when you want guidance without beginning with a full assessment.
A 30-minute communication screening is a brief developmental check. It helps identify whether a child’s communication appears broadly on track, whether home strategies and monitoring may be suitable, or whether a comprehensive assessment would provide more useful information.
A screening may include
Parent or caregiver discussion and review of the main concern.
Observation of communication, interaction and play.
Informal speech and language activities.
Initial recommendations and suitable next steps.
Screening Fees (includes GST)
| Option | Included | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Screening with verbal feedback (no written report) | 30-minute screening with verbal feedback and recommended next steps | $155 |
| Screening with brief written summary | 30-minute screening, verbal feedback and a brief written summary with recommended next steps | $230 |
A screening is not a diagnosis and does not replace comprehensive assessment when a fuller picture is needed.
Comprehensive Assessment
Understand your child’s communication strengths, needs and next steps.
A comprehensive assessment is individualised according to the child’s age, developmental level, communication style and presenting concerns. The direct assessment appointment is usually 75–90 minutes. Complex needs may require more than one appointment or additional assessment time.
An assessment may include
Detailed parent or caregiver interview and developmental history.
Observation during play, conversation and structured activities.
Standardised assessment where appropriate.
Informal and functional assessment of receptive and expressive language.
Speech sound, motor speech, social communication, play, AAC or literacy assessment as relevant.
Oral mechanism examination where indicated.
Discussion of findings, recommendations and suitable next steps.
